Ward Burton grew up in Virginia where he went to high school, and later studied at the Hargrave Military Academy and Elon College.
Burton began his racing career in 1990 in the NASCAR Busch Series and competed there for four seasons. In the first two seasons Burton wasn’t very successful, as he finished in 21st and 18th place respectively.
