Trent attended Aptos High School, and after matriculating went to Fresno State. He became the starting quarterback for Fresno for two and a half seasons and would help the school win three conference titles. He was also named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year and set a NCAA record for pass attempts without an interception. In 1994, he decided to forego his senior year to enter the NFL Draft.

Dilfer was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the sixth pick overall and would become a starter during his second year. He had difficulties during this time and only made a moderate contribution, but slowly started to improve. During his third year, he became the first ever Tampa Bay quarterback to enter the Pro Bowl thanks to great performances during the season. The Buccaneers would defeat the Detroit Lions in the NFC playoffs but eventually lost to the Green Bay Packers. From 1997 to 1998, he continued to perform well though there were some inconsistencies as he was troubled by injuries.

After his contract ended with the Buccaneers, he would sign with the Baltimore Ravens and became their back-up quarterback. Regardless, his net worth was rising. After Dilfer was transitioned into a starter, the Ravens would start to win more, getting seven straight wins into a wild card berth. The Ravens would eventually advance to Super Bowl XXXV and win the title. Interestingly, he was not signed back after the season, making him the only quarterback to be released after winning a Super Bowl.

In 2001, Trent was signed by the Seattle Seahawks to be a back-up quarterback. He then became a starter for a while due to injuries, and would achieve a lot of wins, helping the Seahawks’ run to the AFC, but they fell short. He was re-signed to the team with a four year contract but was injured and lost his starting position. He returned to play, but in 2002 had a season ending injury. In the next few years, he would serve mainly as a relief and mentor role before he was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2005.

Dilfer became the starting quarterback for the Browns, and did well during the season but it wasn’t enough for the Browns to shake off numerous losses. He was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers and became a mentor there. In 2007, he would start for the 49ers after Alex Smith’s shoulder separation injury. After winning a few games, he suffered a concussion which eventually took him out of the season. In the following year he would announce his retirement.

After retiring, Trent became an NFL analyst for ESPN. Prior to being hired, he was already making guest analyst appearances on the NFL Network, and was called to be part of the studio analysts for several events. In 2010, he joined “Monday Night Football”.

For his personal life, it is known that Trent is married to former swimmer Cassandra Dilfer and they have three children, as a son died from heart disease; they reside in Saratoga, California.
