Trent attended Aptos High School, and after matriculating went to Fresno State. He became the starting quarterback for Fresno for two and a half seasons and would help the school win three conference titles. He was also named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year and set a NCAA record for pass attempts without an interception. In 1994, he decided to forego his senior year to enter the NFL Draft.
Dilfer was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the sixth pick overall and would become a starter during his second year. He had difficulties during this time and only made a moderate contribution, but slowly started to improve. During his third year, he became the first ever Tampa Bay quarterback to enter the Pro Bowl thanks to great performances during the season. The Buccaneers would defeat the Detroit Lions in the NFC playoffs but eventually lost to the Green Bay Packers.
