Tom grew up in Billerica, Massachusetts and went to Billerica Memorial High School, where he was a standout student, but played baseball and ice hockey as well, winning the Merrimack Valley`s MVP award in hockey, and regarding baseball, he was one of the main players of the team that won the Division I North Title and the Eastern Massachusetts Championship. Immediately after matriculation, Tom declared for the NHL and MLB Drafts, and was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of NHL Draft, and in the 2nd round by the Atlanta Braves in the MLB Draft.

He chose the career of a baseball player, and made his debut in 1987 with the Braves; however, in the first several seasons, Tom never showed that he could become a star player, but with the beginning of the ‘90s his performances began to improve, and he made six All-Star game appearances in the decade, and won numerous other awards too, thanks to his plays. He was the World Series champion with the Braves in 1995, and the MVP of the series. Furthermore, he won four Silver Slugger Awards and was the NL wins leader five times. Unfortunately, his form began to drop in the early ‘00s, and he was waived by the Braves.

Nevertheless, Tom quickly found a new club, as he signed to a contract worth $42.5 million over four years with the New York Mets, which certainly increased his net worth by a large margin. However, his numbers were nowhere near his stats during the ‘90s, except for the 2006 season, in which he had a 15-7 record and an ERA of 3.82, but wasn`t quite successful in the playoffs, as the Mets lost to St. Louis Cardinals.

After his contract expired, Tom returned to the Atlanta Braves, signing a one year contract in 2008 worth $8 million, but soon he was placed on the disabled list. He stayed with the Braves until 2009, when they released him, and in early 2010 he officially retired from baseball. He collected four more All-Star appearances, in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. Tom amassed the record of 305 wins and 203 losses, with average ERA of 3.54 and 2,607 strikeouts. Thanks to his successful career, Tom was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, which was the first year of his eligibility.

After retirement, Tom stayed in baseball, becoming special assistant of the Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholz, and has also been a color commentator for the Braves` games since the 2011 season.

Regarding his personal life, Tom has been married to Christina St. Onge since 1998; the couple has two children together. Previously, he was married to Carri Ann Dobbins from 1992 to 1997, and they had once child.

Tom is a devout Roman Catholic, and has been involved with numerous charity organizations, such as Volunteers of America, Rally Foundation and CURE Childhood Cancer, among many other.
