Syleena Johnson, nee Thompson, was  born on September 2, 1976 in Harvey, Illinois United States. She  is the daughter of 1960s R&B singer Syl Johnson and Brenda Thompson, who was America’s first black female poilice commissioner. Syleena has been active in her career since 1997, and is perhaps best known for her soul, even soulful, music on the eight studio albums that she has released, including Love Hangover (1999), Chapter 3: The Flesh (2005), Chapter 5: The Underrated (2011), and Chapter 6: Couples Therapy (2013 – 2014).

Syleena Johnson’s`s musical father encouraged his daughter to also became involved in the music industry. In her childhood, Johnson was a fan of Al Green, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner as well, but it was in high school – Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois – where Syleena became keen on soul genre music, although singing in the  school`s choir focused her attention on the gospel genre as well. When Syleena was 15 years old, her parents divorced, however Syleena maintained relationships with both of them.

Syleena Johnson’s net worth started growing in 1994 when she contributed to Back in the Game, an album released by her father, whom she helped both as a singer and songwriter. However, as with many celebrities she had health problems, in Syleena Johnson’s case she needed speech therapy for two years, following the removal of vocal cords.

Syleena attended Drake University in Des Moines, where she contributed to jazz, classical and gospel choirs. In 1996 she moved to Normal`s Illinois State University, and decided to focus on music, a decision made to concentrate on Syleena Johnson’s career and growing net worth  even more. Syleena had  started recording her own songs in 1995, first releasing an album in collaboration with her father Syl Johnson entitled This Time Together By Father And Daughter. Its most popular songs were such as Keep on Loving Me and Piece of the Rock. Some of the videos of the songs appeared on YouTube, too. In 1997 she was offered a contract with Jive Records, and Syleena came into real prominence with her songs under the help of this record company.

In 2005, Syleena Johnson won the Chicago Music Award for Best Female Vocalist, and Truth Award for Top Single for Hypnotic. Syleena was nominated for many more awards, for example for Best Adult Contemporary New Artist Clip of the Year, an award by Billboard Music Video for I Am Your Woman in 2001. Syleena was also nominated for awards by MTV Video Music: Best Breakthrough Video, Best Female Video, Best New Artist. All the MTV nominations were received for All Falls Down in 2004 and shared along with Kanye West. Johnson increased her net worth with sales from I Am Your Woman: The Best of Syleena Johnson, a compilation album released in 2008, then further along with Musiq Soulchild, Syleena released 9INE in 2013.

In her personal life, Syleena Johnson married Marcus Betts in 2000, who became her manager for her first two albums. Following divorce, in July 2006 she became engaged to basketball player Kiwane Garris, and in 2007, their son Kiwane Garris Jr was born. In 2011 their  second son Kingston arrived.
