Stefan came to prominence when he was still a junior; he won four Grand Slam junior titles in 1983, so far the only player to achieve this feat. That year he also became a professional, and won his first doubles title in a tournament held in Basel. While playing at the 1983 US Open, Stefan hit the linesman Dick Wertheim in the groin during a serve, which later caused his death, since Dick fell on the ground head first which left him unconscious.

The following year he won his first title, at the Milan Indoor championship, when he defeated Mats Wilander in straight sets. Also, he was victorious at the 1984 Summer Olympics, however, at the time tennis was credited only as an exhibition sport.

In 1985, Stefan won his first grand slam title at the Australian Open, again defeating Mats Wilander in the finals, again in straight sets, and also won the tournament held in Memphis, USA, where he destroyed Yannick Noah in the finals, 6:1 and 6:0. The same year he won two more titles, including in Basel, Switzerland and San Francisco, USA. He continued successfully and in 1986 won three more singles titles, and at the beginning of 1987 defended his 1985 Australian Open title, edging out Pat Cash in five sets. In 1987 Stefan brought home six more trophies from tournaments held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Tokyo, Japan, Cincinnati, USA, and Stockholm, Sweden, among others, which only increased his net worth.

In 1988 he won his first Wimbledon title, defeating Boris Becker in four sets; it was their first of three Wimbledon finals, Becker won the title the following year, while Stefan won it again in 1990, in five sets, and in that way the two became two of the greatest Wimbledon rivals. From 1988 until 1990 he won some of most notable titles in his career, including the Grand Prix Masters, Long Island, USA and Indian Wells, USA. Also, he was the runner-up at the ATP Tour World Championship, held in Frankfurt Germany, where he lost to Andre Agassi in four sets. In 1991 he won his first US Open, defeating American Jim Courier in three sets, while he was also victorious at tournaments held in Sydney, Australia, Tokyo, Japan, and Queen’s Club, London, which only increased further his net worth.

In 1992 Stefan enriched the list of won tournaments by several titles, including at Hamburg, Germany, where he defeated Michael Stich after trailing, then defeated MaliVai Washington for the title at New Haven, USA, and his second US Open title when he beat Pete Sampras 3:1 after losing the first set.

Stefan played tennis on competitive level until 1996 extending his dominance on courts with titles in Madrid, Spain in 1993, Doha, Qatar in 1994 and Washington, USA the same year. His last title came in 1995 at Doha, Qatar, beating Magnus Larsson in straight sets.

Apart from a successful career in singles and doubles as well, Stefan was also successful with the Swedish national team, winning four Davis Cup trophies.

He has also received several accolades and posted several records, including being one of two players to assume No. 1 in both singles and doubles, with John McEnroe being the other, but Stefan is the only player to win Player of the Year and Doubles Team of the Year awards, and in 2004 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

After his retirement, Stefan started playing squash, and also became a part of the Black Rock Tour of Champions, which is a tennis tour consisting of retired tennis players. He won a tournament held in Paris, defeating Sergei Bruguera in the finals.
