Halep began playing tennis when she was four years old. At 16 she moved to Bucharest and started to play in junior competitions, winning the French Roland Garros Junior Championship in 2008. In 2015 Halep won the Indian Wells Master, her first Premier Mandatory WTA and her biggest career title ever, by defeating Jelena Jankovic in the final. She qualified for the Singapore 2015 WTA Finals, and reached the semifinals at the 2015 US Open, but eventually lost to Flavia Pennetta.

In 2016, Halep reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, eventually losing to Angelique Kerber. She then defeated Madison Keys to win the Rogers Cup title, reaching world No. 3 in WTA rankings.
