To start with, Townsend was raised in Chicago, the second of four children of Robert and Shirley Townsend. As a child he began to imitate various actors and thus to entertain his mother. He was educated at Austin High School. His real career began with improvisations at the New York Comedy Club. From there, he went to Hollywood, although it is worth mentioning that he studied at Illinois University for a year, but dropped out to pursue a career in acting.

His career began in 1975 after his first appearance in the feature film entitled “Cooley High”, even though his role was uncredited. Later on, he appeared on the big screen creating small roles in such films as “Monkey Hustle” (1976), “Streets of Fire” (1984), “Soldier’s Story” (1984), “American Flyers” (1985) and other films. In 1986, Townsend starred alongside Sondra Locke in the film “Ratboy” directed by Sondra herself. Then, he landed the main role of the satirical comedy film “Hollywood Shuffle” (1987) which was directed, written and produced by Townsend as well. Moreover, he has directed, produced and written other films, including “The Five Heartbeats” (1991), “The Meteor Man” (1991), “Townsend Television (1993) and others. His net worth grew steadily.

Robert Townsend then went on to solely directing films, which have increased the total size of his net worth considerably. From 1997 to 2003, Townsend directed the comedy film “B*A*P*S” (1997), the television film “Jackie’s Back” (1999), the comedy adventure film “Up, Up, and Away” (2000), the drama film “Livin’ for Love: The Natalie Cole Story” (2000), the show-time television film “10,000 Black Men Named George” (2002), as well as the film “Black Listed” (2003). The latter was followed by a five-year hiatus in the career of Townsend.

Robert got back into the industry by starring in the drama film “Of Boys and Men” (2008) directed by Carl Seaton. Moreover, he directed the film “Phantom Punch” the same year. Lately, he has directed the films “In the Hive” (2012), “Playin’ for Love” (2014) and “Bill Cosby 77” (2014). It should be noted that Robert was nominated for an Ovation Award as he landed the lead role of Dan in the rock musical “Next to Normal” in the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Finally, in the personal life of the director and actor, he married Cheri Jones in 1990, and the family has three children, however, Robert and Cheri divorced in 2001.
