Robert is of English ancestry, as his father emigrated to Australia from his birthplace of Leeds, UK, when he was a young man. Robert grew up in housing projects in Melbourne, and started playing golf when he was seven years old.

He turned pro in 1992, making a difference in no time, as he was the winner of the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit that year, since when on the Tour, Robert has won 13 titles, including the Heineken Classic in 1995, then the Australian PGA Championship in 2000 and 2001, and in 2005 becoming the first – and so far only – golfer to win the “triple crown” of the Australian Masters, Australian PGA and Australian Open in the same year. His performance then started to decline, and he waited four years for a new trophy, when he won the Australian PGA Championship in 2009, and also the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the Sunshine Tour the same year, which only further increased his wealth.

Apart from success on the PGA of Australasia tour, Robert has won events on the PGA Tour and European Tour. His first success on the former came in 2000, with victory at the Shell Houston Open, and the same year he posted the best result winning the Advil Western Open, increasing further his net worth. The following year Robert won the Nissan Open, and in the same year his fourth and last title on the PGA Tour, at the Marconi Pennsylvania Classic. To speak of his success on the European Tour, he has also won four titles, with the first one in 1994 at the Honda Open. Two years later he won three titles, including the Alamo English Open, and One 2 One British Masters.

Robert has also had success on the international level, playing for the International Team in the President’s Cup six times, then playing for Australia in the World Cup three times, Dunhill Cup two times and Alfred Dunhill Challenge in 1995 where he represented Australasia.

Throughout his career, Robert has become known for his altercations with caddies and other players, with statements coming from those people that Robert was quite verbally abusive. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the best Australian golfers.

Regarding his personal life, Robert was married to Sandy Kempsey from 1999 until 2010; the couple has two children together.

Back in 2015, Robert visited a strip bar in Honolulu, Hawaii, after he missed the cut at the Sony Open, held in the Hawaii capital. He was then allegedly kidnapped, beaten and left in an alley several miles from the bar. Police did an investigation and even made an arrest as Robert’s credit card was used for adult entertainment purpose, however, it all turned out to be a case of “mistaken identity”.

Despite all the troubles he had been through and his personality, Robert has also been a part of the Challenge Cancer Support Network, as their patron and spokesperson. Thanks to his contribution, he received an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.
