Morley Safer was raised with two siblings in an Austrian Jewish family in his hometown by his mother, Anna and his father Max Safer, who worked as an upholsterer. Upon matriculation, he enrolled at Harbord Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Ontario, and during the same period he also attended the University of Western Ontario; however, he quit to pursue his career as a journalist.
Thus, Morley began his professional career as a newspaper reporter, and worked for a number of newspapers such as the Toronto Telegram, the London Free Press, etc. He also worked for the Oxford Mail in England, after which he returned and started pursuing further his career as a member of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), working in the positions of correspondent and producer.
