Concerning her professional career, Monica Seles won nine tournaments Grand Slam, managing to reach the number one ranking position. On the 30th April 1993, a fan named Parche, obsessed with Steffi Graf, assaulted Seles by stabbing her in the back on court – he claimed wanting to regain the No.1 for rival Steffi Graf. The attack changed the course of tennis history, as thereafter security measures were significantly strengthened. Seles was out of tennis for 28 months, and meanwhile Parche was charged but was not jailed because of mental instability and was sentenced to two years probation and psychological treatment. Because of this attack, Seles did not play again in Germany.

On returning to the tennis circuit in 1995, Seles won the Canadian open championship.
