Mike Tomlin was raised with his older brother in his hometown, where his father Ed Tomplin initially played football at Hampton Institute and later for the Baltimore Colts, and Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. However, Mike was brought up by his mother Julia and stepfather. Anyway, he grew up in a family which valued sports and he started playing football from an early age. While he attended Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, he excelled in playing as he finished his high school career setting a school-record with 20 touchdown catches. After matriculation in 1989, Mike entered the College of William and Mary, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. There he played for the college team in the positions of a tight end and wide receiver. Although he was named a second-team All-Yankee Conference, Mike never played professionally.

Mike’s coaching career began in 1995, when he was appointed as the wide receivers coach of the Virginia Military Institute football team. From there he moved to the University of Memphis and the Memphis Tigers football team to work as a graduate assistant in 1996. The following year, Mike’s net worth increased when he was appointed as the wide receivers coach for the Arkansas State University football team, and the following year he was the defensive backs coach for the university.

In 1999, Mike became the defensive backs coach of the Cincinnati University football team, until in 2001 he received an offer from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, marking the beginning of his NFL career. He stayed with the Buccaneers until the end of the 2005 season, when he became the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings for the 2006 season. Under his tenure, the Vikings finished as 8th best defense in the league, and thanks to his tactics and skills, Mike received an offer from the Pittsburgh Steelers to become the head coach of the team, which he immediately accepted. In his first season as a head coach, Mike had a record of 10 wins and 6 losses, which placed his team in 1st in the AFC North Division, but they lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card game.

The second season was Mike’s best, since the Steelers became the Super Bowl XL111 Champions, defeating the Arizona Cardinals. Two years later, the Steelers reached the final again, but lost to the Green Bay Packers; regardless, Mike’s net worth increased to a large degree during his tenure with the Steelers, since his yearly salary is equal to $6 million, and is valid until the end of the 2016 season, but as Mike has never had a losing season, he seems certain to be offered new contract, which will only increase further his overall net worth.
