Margaret Trudeau was the daughter of James Sinclair, a politician and former Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and Doris Kathleen Sinclair, nee Bernard. Besides her father’s Scottish heritage, Margaret has Nias and Malaccan ancestry on her mother’s side of the family, due to the family’s long history as colonists in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. When she was four, her family moved to Ontario due to her father’s political obligations. Margaret studied sociology at the Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, from which she graduated in 1969. She was twenty-three when she married Pierre Trudeau, and became the wife of a Prime Minister.

Margaret’s own career really began after her tenure as the Prime Minister’s wife, first with a starring role in the comedy film “L’ange gardien” (1978), in which she played Annie. Following her separation in 1977, she supported herself by embarking on a writing career, documenting her marriage experiences in the book “Beyond Reason” (1979). A versatile person, Margaret decided to try her hand in hosting television shows, first with “Morning Magazine” from 1981 to 1983, and then she hosted the self-titled television series “Margaret” from 1983 to 1984. In the meantime, she starred in another movie, this time a drama called “Kings and Desperate Men” (1981), with Patrick McGoohan, Alexis Kanner, and Andrea Marcovicci. She also published another book in 1982, entitled “Consequences”.

Next phase of her career began with the tragic death of her youngest son in an avalanche in 1998; afterwards, Margaret became an advocate for WaterCan and avalanche safety. Having suffered from bipolar disorder and bouts of depression her entire life, she is also an advocate for people who suffer from mental illness, and she often spoke of her experience in order to reduce the stigma surrounding these disorder, and her advocacy includes writing a book about her experiences, entitled “Changing My Mind” (2010), in which she detailed her struggle. For her work in this field, she was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario in 2013. As for her other advocacy, Margaret serves as the honorary president of WaterAid Canada, which aims to provide sustainable water supply and sanitation services in developing countries. Following “Changing My Mind”, she published another inspirational book, this time aimed at women, “The Time of Your Life: Choosing a vibrant, joyful future” (2015). She is also supportive of the work of her eldest son, Justin, the current Prime Minister of Canada, though she chooses to remain out of the public eye.

Regarding her personal life, Margaret has been married twice, and both of her marriages were cut short due to her mental health problems. She had three sons with her first husband, Pierre, two of whom survive. From her second marriage to Fried Kemper, real-estate developer, she has a son and a daughter.
