Margaret Trudeau was the daughter of James Sinclair, a politician and former Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and Doris Kathleen Sinclair, nee Bernard. Besides her father’s Scottish heritage, Margaret has Nias and Malaccan ancestry on her mother’s side of the family, due to the family’s long history as colonists in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. When she was four, her family moved to Ontario due to her father’s political obligations. Margaret studied sociology at the Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, from which she graduated in 1969. She was twenty-three when she married Pierre Trudeau, and became the wife of a Prime Minister.
Margaret’s own career really began after her tenure as the Prime Minister’s wife, first with a starring role in the comedy film “L’ange gardien” (1978), in which she played Annie.
