Davenport’s parents were both involved in sport, albeit not tennis. Her father, Winthrop “Wink” Davenport, had a place on the 1968 U.S. Olympic volley ball team, and her mother, Ann, was President of the Southern California Volleyball Association. Davenport began playing tennis aged five, and joined the US Tennis Association at age fourteen, at about the same time reaching a useful height of six feet two inches tall. In 1992, she was the US Junior Open champion, and then entered onto the professional circuit at the age of sixteen, in 1993, although not matriculating from Murrieta Valley High School until the following year.

Lindsay made quick progress – in 1996, she won the gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics, in 1998 she was champion at the US Open, won Wimbledon in 1999, and in 2000 the Australian Open. The only Grand Slam she didn’t win was the French Open; in 1998 she was a semi-finalist there, but ultimately lost out to Spanish champion, Arantxa Sanchex Vicario. During her career, she reached world #1 ranking a total of four times, meanwhile winning WTA Tour prize money of $22,166,338, greatly contributing to her net worth of course, and which still puts her at number eight in the all-time prize money rankings.

In 2002, Davenport experienced a setback when she was forced to undergo right knee surgery, after injuring herself in a match against Kim Clijsters. She found herself unable to play for much of the next year, and just scraped into the top ten players list.

Speaking in 2005, Davenport discussed her wish for female tennis players to receive equal prize money amounts to that of their male counterparts, after the Dubai Open became the first tournament to introduce equal prize money, although the women still play a maximum of three sets in a match.

Davenport announced in 2006 that she was pregnant, and although there was no mention of retirement at that time, she stated that she might not play again. Davenport played her last match in 2010. After leaving the court, she coached professional player Madison Keys from 2014-2015.

Throughout her career, it was noted that Davenport received less publicity than other female tennis players, particularly Anna Kournikova, who never won a Grand Slam or WTA title, but whose personal life and appearance have been discussed at length in tabloids. She has, at times, been criticized for her fluctuating weight, at one point reaching two hundred and twenty pounds.

Regardless, she was ranked as the twenty ninth greatest player of the past twenty years, male or female, in a 2005 issue of TENNIS Magazine, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2014.

In her personal life, Davenport married her coach’s brother, Jon Leach, in Hawaii in April 2003; Leach is a four time All-American tennis player at the University of Southern California. Together, they have a son and three daughters, and currently reside in Irvine, California.
