Leslie was born to Margaret Petit, a dancer on Broadway and Claude Caron a chemist and pharmacist. She took after her mother and pursued an artistic career, firstly as a ballerina. Caron was discovered by Gene Kelly in the “Roland Petit” company, who cast her as his co-star in “An American in Paris” film musical in 1951, and thanks to this, she signed a long-term MGM contract which secured her a series of films, including the same year in “The Man With a Cloak”(1951) co-starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joseph Cotton, and “The Glass Slipper” (1955). She also appeared in successful musicals “Lili”(1953) – receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress – “Daddy Long Legs”(1955) next to Fred Astaire, and “Gigi”(1958).
