Alexander attended Queensborough Community College, and would first appear on Broadway, becoming part of productions such as “Chicago” and “Dreamgirls”. She received a full scholarship to the Alvin Aily American Dance Theater School, but while simultaneously doing various choreography jobs, she met Whitney Houston and the two would start to collaborate. She then became a choreographer for Houston’s world tour, and appeared as a dancer in Natalie Cole’s “Pink Cadillac” music video in 1988. Her net worth was established.

Around this time in the late 1980s, she started becoming a regular face on television and in films, some of her early ones include “Joshua Tree”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, and “Sugar Hill”. In 1995, she was cast in the comedy series “NewsRadio” and would stay in the show until the fourth season. She also had a recurring role in “ER”, playing the character Jackie Robbins. Other guest appearances she made include “Cosby”, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, and “La Femme Nikita”. In 2000, she was cast in the Emmy award winning HBO miniseries “The Corner”, which earned critical acclaim for her performance as the drug addicted Fran Boyd. This led to more films including “Dark Blue” and “Emmet’s Mark”, and an increase in her net worth.

In 2002, she became part of the police drama “CSI: Miami”, portraying the medical examiner Alexx Woods for seven seasons, leaving the show just before the end of the 2008 season, but still making a few guest appearances in the show. During the same year, she was cast as a lead in a pilot entitled “Treme”, playing a bar owner in a neighborhood of New Orleans. She would gain critical acclaim once more, and would be part of the show until the end of its run. Her next series would be “Scandal”, portraying the evil mother of Kerry Washinton’s character. Thanks to her performance, she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

One of her latest projects is the HBO film “Bessie” which is about blues singer Bessie Smith, and she was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Television Award for her performance in a supporting role.

For her personal life, any relationships are kept strictly private. It is known that Khandi still retains her love for dancing and performing on stage. She is known to still participate in various productions from time to time.
