This helped the player to decide to leave the NBA to discover his talent in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), in which he played for Cedar Rapids Silver Bullets and became one of the stars of the minor league with averages of 21.7 points 5.5 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game. Nevertheless, this was insufficient to be drafted by an NBA team, so the player started the following season in the World Basketball League representing the Memphis Rockers.

Despite an injury in the season 1993-1994, Starks marked 19 points and delivered 5.9 assists average, statistics that earned him his only selection to an All-Star Game. In 1994-1995, John Starks entered NBA history by becoming the first player to attempt more than 600 3-point shots and to score more than 200. The arrival of prodigy Allan Houston confined Starks to the bench, but he showed averages of 13.8 points 2.8 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.17 steals in only 26.5 minutes per game. In January 1999, he signed an agreement with the Golden State Warriors, and then in August 2000 he joined the Utah Jazz for what was his final challenge in the NBA. He played 141 games in 2 years, missing some for disciplinary reasons.
