He later graduated from Fordham University in 1971with a degree in economics and went on to earn a masters degree in secondary education from the University of Delaware in 1974. He was part of the football coaching staff in several schools, including being the defensive secondary and special teams coach at Lafayette College, before becoming the defensive coordinator at Dartmouth, with the team winning two Ivy League Championships. After 16 years of football coaching, he left to pursue a career in business, but his net worth was already well-founded.
Joe worked at Merrill Lynch for 17 years as a member of several executive committees before becoming the CEO at TD Ameritrade in 2001.
