Tressel’s father worked as a coach at Mentor’s High School, thenas head football coach for Baldwin-Wallace College after a 34-game winning streak. Jim attended many of his father’s games and practices, and after graduating from Berea High School, he played quarterback at Baldwin-Wallace under his father. During this period, he won all-conference honors and earned four varsity letters. While studying at Baldwin-Wallace, Jim joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; he graduated in 1975 with a BA in education. He established his net worth by first working in football as a graduate assistant at the University of Akron, where he coached receivers, quarterbacks and running backs, while at the same time earning his master’s degree.
He transferred to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1978, but stayed there for only three years before leaving to work as a quarterbacks coach at Syracuse. Two years later, Ohio State hired him as a receivers and quarterbacks coach, subsequently helping lead the team to new records and great results during his tenure, including Big Ten champions and winning the Citrus Bowl in 1985.
Jim left Ohio State at the end of the 1985 season, and became head coach at Youngstown State University. In the following years, Tressel eventually led the Youngstown State to win four national championships and a very impressive win-loss record. During the ‘90s he was named Division I-AA Coach of the Year four times. In 2001, Jim was hired as Ohio State’s head football coach, achieving a winning percentage of 81.0%. He has become one of two active coaches who have five or more national championships in any division. He led the Buckeyes to win the 2002 National Championship and the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, and therefore became the first coach to win the AFCA’s Coach of the Year award while at different schools. However, in March 2011, Jim was suspended by Ohio State for the first two games of the season for not informing them about NCAA violations involving their football players. This led to the OS team receiving an additional one year’s probation and being banned from post-season play in 2012. Regardless, his net worth had increased considerably.
At this point, his coaching career was approaching an end, and Tressel accepted an administrative position at the University of Akron, in February 2012.
