Howard Lederer grew up in New Hampshire with his sisters Annie Duke and Katy Lederer, and started playing cards from an early age before being introduced to chess, in which he became very interested, so he began playing it competitively. After finishing high school, he moved to New York, where he started participating in live poker games as a member of the Mayfair Club.

Lederer began tutoring his sister Annie who played poker in Montana at the time, and tried to qualify for the World Series of Poker in 1986 but didn’t succeed.

However, Howard qualified the following year, made it to the final table, and won $10,000 after finishing fifth. In 1993, he moved to Las Vegas to focus on his pro- poker career, and between 1993 and 1999, he made it to eight final tables at WSOP events. Later, Howard won his first WSOP bracelet (2000) at a $5,000 limit Omaha Hi/Lo tournament, and year later he won his second bracelet, this time in a $5,000 no limit Deuce to Seven tournament. His net worth was growing steadily.

Lederer also won two World Poker Tour (WPT) titles, in 2002 and 2003, while he also won two first places at the WPT events in 2004. In 2008, Howard competed at the Aussie Millions High-Roller event and won over $1 million Australian dollars, while in 2010 he played at the WSOP’s Tournament of Champions and finished in second place, winning $250,000. Lederer has now won over $7 million in total live tournament winnings.

In addition to playing live poker, Lederer has also appeared in numerous poker-related shows such as NBC’s “Poker After Dark”, “Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, Learn from the Pros”, and he has also written for and contributed to “The Full Tilt Poker Strategy Guide”. From 2006 to 2011, Lederer served as a member of Poker Players Alliance’s board of directors.

In 2004, his newly-founded company Tiltware LLC launched Full Tilt Poker, the popular host of the poker online games. Full Tilt was also a sponsor of the ESPN’s show “Poker After Dark”.
