“Macho’s” parents separated when he was three, and he moved to New York with his mother.  A troublesome child since his earliest days, Macho Camacho would constantly get into fights, cause trouble, and as a result he was eventually sent to jail when he was only fifteen years old. Fortunately one of his teacher’s tutored him to read and write, and introduced him to boxing and karate. Macho Camacho soon discovered his passion for boxing, and subsequently won three New York Golden Gloves Championships, before deciding to pursue a professional boxing career.

Camacho began his rise to fame by initially competing in the Super Featherweight division. He then advanced to the Lightweight division, where he had some of his more notable fights with Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, both of which he won. Macho Camacho then competed against Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya, and won a fight against Raul Jorge Munoz. Macho fought and beat the best boxers around during his strongest, avoiding no-one until he went on hiatus due to legal issues. However, Macho is the only boxer recognised to have won seven championships, in the  super featherweight (WBC, 1983), lightweight (WBC, 1985), and junior welterweight (WBO, 1989 and 1991) divisions. In total, he had 88 fights for 79 wins.

Hector Macho Camacho’s troublesome attitude had not changed since his youth, and was perhaps the main reason as to why Camacho’s career went downhill. Macho Camacho’s legal issues started in 2005 when he was charged with an attempted burglary in an electronic goods store, and possession of illegal drugs. Camacho pleaded guilty to being under the influence of ecstasy during the burglary and even though he was initially given a seven year sentence, it was changed to a one year sentence and probation. In 2011, Camacho was mixed-up in a shooting when he was attacked and shot at three times. Camacho, however, did not file a report. Later that same year, Macho Camacho was charged with child abuse for attacking his teenage son. He was released from jail on a $5,000 bail and was awaiting trial at the time of his death.

In 2012 Camacho was yet again involved in a shooting accident, and the morning after the incident Camacho’s brain stem was pronounced dead. Hector Macho Camacho passed away on the 23rd of November, 2012 at the age of fifty. A controversial professional boxer who Hector Macho Camacho has an estimated net worth of $100 thousand. Even after his passing, Macho Camacho left a huge legacy after himself. Considered to be among the “Top 5 Puerto Rican Boxers”, Camacho is to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015.

Macho Camacho was married to Amy Torres (1991-2001), after which she took out a restraining order against him. He had three children with her, as well as a child from a previous relationship. Two of his sons, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr. and Tyler Camacho are following their father’s footsteps and have become professional boxers.
