Esai Morales was born to Iris Margarita, a union activist who participated in the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, and Esai Morales, Sr., a welder. He went to the School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, after which he played in theatre and television in New York. Esai’s big screen debut came in 1982 in Paul Morrissey’s drama “Forty Deuce”, and a year after, he played in Rick Rosenthal’s “Bad Boys” starring Sean Penn.

Before getting a leading part in “Rainy Day Friends” in 1985, Morales briefly appeared in a few TV series, and later played in the mini-series “On Wings of Eagles” (1986) with Burt Lancaster, Richard Crenna, and Paul Le Mat. In 1987, Morales portrayed the ex-convict brother of Ritchie Valens in a biography drama “La Bamba” starring Lou Diamond Phillips, a role which gained him a lot of popularity, and he was frequently seen on both TV and films from that point. In 1987, Esai appeared in “The Principal” with Jim Belushi, Louis Gossett Jr., and later in Howard Brookner’s “Bloodhounds of Broadway” in 1989. His net worth was growing steadily.

In the early 90’s, Morales worked on “Naked Tango” (1990), “Freejack” (1992) starring Emilio Estevez, Mick Jagger, and Rene Russo, and “Ultraviolet” (1992). He continued with “Rapa Nui” (1994), “In the Army Now” (1994), “The Burning Season: The Chico Mendes Story” (1994) with Raul Julia, and “Don’t Do It” (1994). In the mid-‘90’s, Esai played in “My Family” (1995), “Deadlocked: Escape from Zone 14” (1995), “The Real Thing” (1996) with James Russo and Jeremy Piven, and “Death in Granada” (1996) starring Andy Garcia, which increased his net worth by a large margin.

He ended the decade with such films as “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit” (1998) with Joe Mantegna, “Southern Cross” (1999), and in a TV mini-series “Atomic Train” (1999). Since 2000, Morales played in several popular series including “Resurrection Blvd.” (2000-2002), “NYPD Blue” (2001-2004), “American Family” (2002), “Vanished” (2006), and “Jericho” (2008). In the 2000’s, Esai also had roles in movies such as “Paid in Full” (2002) with Mekhi Phifer, Wood Harris, and Chi McBride, “Once Upon a Wedding” (2005), Richard Linklater’s “Fast Food Nation” (2006), and “La Linea – The Line” (2009) starring Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia.

Morales played in “Caprica” from 2009 to 2010, “Gun Hill Road” (2011), “Fairly Legal” (2011-2012), “Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike” (2012), and “Magic City” (2013). Most recently, Esai filmed “Never Back Down: No Surrender” (2016), and is currently working on “L.A. Series” (2016), and “The Art of Living” (2017), which will certainly increase further his net worth.
