They had difficulties in the next season as their manager was replaced and they had trouble adjusting. Despite this, he would help the team win the Copa del Rey for the second time.
David would become a very important part of the roster for two more seasons, but in 2010, Barcelona and Valencia completed a deal that sent Villa to Barcelona for a 40 million Euro transfer fee. He signed a four year contract with Barca and was given a salary worth seven million Euros per season. Many fans anticipated his arrival and he would continue to put in great performances during his time there. He was named “Male Athlete of the Year” by the United States Sports Academy, and would help Barcelona win the UEFA Champions League final. In the next season he only played a few games because he broke his tibia in a match which sidelined him for eight months. Following his return, he played less so as not to aggravate the injury, but was still able to amass 16 goals in 39 appearances.
