Little is known about his early life and family, apart from the fact that he is the younger brother of Jason Guida, who is also mixed martial artist. Clay went to Johnsburg High School in Johnsburg, Illinois, where he became interested in wrestling and joined the high school team. Following his matriculation, Clay enrolled at William Rainey Harper College, where he also continued with his wrestling career.
Before he turned professional, Jason held several odd jobs, including working as a carpenter, out of which he got the nickname “The Carpenter”.
