Billups attended George Washington High School and already during his studies he received an impressive number of acknowledgments of his talent. He was a four-time All-State first team pick, three times Colorado Mr. Basketball and twice Colorado Player of the Year. Upon matriculation, Chauncey decided to enroll at the University of Colorado where he continued to rack up awards as he was named to the All-Big 12 Conference First Team in the 1996-97 season, the Basketball Times All-American First Team and Consensus 2nd team All-American. In the 1997 NBA Draft, he was third to be drafted by the Boston Celtics but due to poor relations with the club management he was traded to the Toronto Raptors and soon after, the Denver Nuggets. Regardless, his net worth was on the rise.

In 2000 he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves as a back-up, but where he gained much experience through his teammates and improved his performance. During the 2001-02 season, Chauncey replaced injured Terrell Brandon and made his breakthrough, as his team won 50 games and Billups averaging 22 points per game. This led to him becoming a free agent and in June 2002 Chauncey signed a six-year $35 million contract with the Detroit Pistons, where he was to become the team’s new starting point guard, soon gaining respect and accolades from fans and colleagues. Billups helped the team finish first in the Eastern Conference in 2002-03 and earned him the nickname “Mr.Big-Shot”. In 2004 he helped Detroit win the NBA Finals, and himself the NBA Finals MVP Award. The following year, he was named to the 2005 NBA Second All-Defensive Team. By 2006, he became to co-captain of the team, but despite their relative success, the team failed to make it to the NBA Finals for the first time in three years.

In July 2007, after being an unrestricted free agent for several years, Chauncey signed a $46 million, four-year contract with the Pistons. However, during the first round of the 2008 NBA playoffs, he was injured in a game against the Orlando Magic which left him sitting for the three remaining games.

In 2008, Billups was traded to the Denver Nuggets once again, and contributed to the team’s regeneration and franchise records. During his first year, Chauncey led them back to the NBA Conference Finals, and was selected to his second All-NBA Third Team in 2009. Despite his desire to retire as a member of the Nuggets, in February 2011 Billups was traded to the New York Knicks. As was the case with his previous teams, Chauncey boosted the Knicks’ game and the team made the playoffs for the first time since 2004. However, he suffered a knee injury during the first game and was sidelined for the rest of the playoffs.

In December 2011, his tenure with the Knicks ended and he became an unrestricted free agent again, but soon started playing for the Los Angeles Clippers, in the shooting guard position. Two years later, he was rewarded with the inaugural Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award.

After two years with the Clippers, Billups signed a $35 million contract to return to the Detroit Pistons, but more knee problems led to him missing most of the 2013-14 season, so in September 2014, due to these fitness problems, Chauncey announced his retirement from the NBA.

When it comes to his personal life, Billups has been married to Piper since 2001, and they have three daughters.
