While she was born in what is now known as Guyana, Pounder studied in England, and later moved to the US in 1970. There she attended Ithaca College.

She made her acting debut in the film “All that Jazz”, in which she played a nurse. She would then appear in numerous productions including “The Mighty Gents” and “Open Admissions”. In 1982 she moved to Los Angeles, and starred in the film “Bagdad Café”, also taking small roles in several successful films. She later focused on a television career, appearing in popular shows including “Hill Street Blues”, “The X-Files”, Quantum Leap” and “Living Single”. She also appeared in several dramatic television movies, including “Third Degree Burn” and “Leap of Faith”. Her first long term role would be in “ER” from 1994 to 1997, in which she was cast as Dr. Angela Hicks. She then returned to making various guest appearances for shows including “The Practice” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, all of which contributed to her growing net worth.

In 2002, she was cast as Detective Claudette Wyms for the series “The Shield”, thanks to which performance she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Prior to that, she had already been nominated for an Emmy for both “The X-Files” and “ER”. She continued her work on “The Shield” until its conclusion in 2007. She then went on to do voice acting work for both animated projects and video game; these included “Aladdin and the King of Thieves”, “Gargoyles” and “Justice League Unlimited, and for the video game “Batman: Arkham Origins” and its various sequels. Afterwards, she was cast in “Warehouse 13”, and stayed in the show until its finale in 2014. She also co-starred in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”.

For her personal life, Pounder has been married to Senegalese anthropologist Boubacar Kone since 1970 they had one ceremony in Senegal and another in Los Angeles; the couple now have three children and six grandchildren. Boubacar is known to be the founder of the Musee Boribana in Dakar, Senegal. Pounder is an advocate of post-apartheid awareness as well as HIV issues. #Quote
1 With acting, I started very young, and I'd performed for a lot of children in boarding schools, late at night after the dormitory lights were out. I'd have a flashlight, and I'd be Count Dracula, or Shakespeare, or Yogi Bear, and leap from bunk to bunk. I loved the laughter; I liked the way it made people feel.
2 Applause is the most powerful thing... people talk about the sound of it, but what I hear is glee.

#Trademark
1 Often plays strong but calm authority figures
