Griese grew up in Miami, where he attended Christopher Columbus High School, being involved in the school’s football, basketball and golf programs. In 1993 he enrolled at the University of Michigan, joining the school’s football team, the Wolverines. After being redshirted during his first season, Griese became the starting quarterback in his second season with the team, leading the Wolverines to wins over Ohio State and the Buckeyes. He then helped them to achieve an undefeated record in 1998, winning the national championship, and being named the MVP of the Rose Bowl. He was eventually inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2012. He graduated from Michigan in 1998, with a BA degree in individualized concentration.

Griese was selected in the third round as the 91st overall pick by the Denver Broncos in the 1998 NFL Draft; his net worth started to rise. That year the Broncos won the 1998 Super Bowl, but he played minimal time. The following year Griese became the team’s starting quarterback, earning a 75.6 passer rating, which increased to 102.9 in the following season, when he was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Two years later the team released him, but Griese’s tenure with the Broncos enabled him to achieve popularity and considerable wealth.

After spending the 2003 season with the Miami Dolphins, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004, helping the team to a 5-1 record in the following year, before tearing his ACL. All added to his net worth.

The player went on to sign a five-year deal with the Chicago Bears in 2006, further expanding his fortune. His action became quite limited in his first season and he played as the team’s second string quarterback. After winning the 2006 NFC Championship, the Bears were defeated by the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl XLI. In the next season, Griese became the team’s starting quarterback, but was removed from the position shortly after.
In 2008 the Bears traded him to the Buccaneers. He went on to help the team to defeat the Bears and the Green Bay Packers later that year, but following his release in 2009, Griese announced his retirement from professional football. Regardless, his net worth was well established.

Later that year, ESPN hired him as a color analyst on its college football coverage, where he has remained ever since. In 2010-2011 he served as a radio color commentator for 850 KOA (AM)’s coverage of the Denver Broncos’ football for that season. Griese’s broadcasting career has been another source of his wealth.

Griese has also written a book called “Undefeated” co=written with his father, portraying their lives in the NFL as well as their struggling with breast cancer and the death of his mother.

When it comes to his private life, Griese has been married to Brook McClintic since 2004. The couple has one child together.

The former player has been involved in philanthropy. Having lost his mother to cancer when he was a teenager, Griese eventually founded a children’s grief support center in Denver, Colorado, called Judi’s House, for which he has received the Patterson Award. He has also co-created the Griese, Hutchinson and Woodson Champions for Children’s Hearts golf weekend, to provide funds for the construction of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the Michigan Congenital Heart Center. Griese’s charity work has also earned him the Big Ten’s Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award and the Big Ten’s Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award.
