In 1945 Greenspan started to study at New York University, where he earned B.S. and M.A. degrees in economics, and then in 1977 Greenspan earned his PhD in economics from the same university. His career as an economist started when he was studying,  working in Brown Brothers Harriman, The National Industrial Conference Board, Towsend-Greenspand & Co. and other companies and institutions. These of course added a lot to Alan Greenspan’s initial net worth. What is more, Greenspan worked in such companies as General Foods, Automating Data Processing, Morgan Guaranty Trust Company and many others.

In 1987 Alan was appointed the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, and became well known during his tenure, and gained acclaim from many others. Alan was in this position until 2006 one of the longest periods for this position, which not only made Alan more respected and popular, but also had a huge impact on the growth of Alan’s net worth. When Alan decided to retire from this position, he created his own company, called Greenspan Associates LLC. Later he also became a consultant for Pacific Investment Management Company and Paulson & Co. All of this made Greenspan’s net worth a lot higher, and he continues to work in his own company and consults with others.

In addition to his career as a successful economist, Alan has also written a memoir, called The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World. This book also added to Alan Greenspan’s net worth.

In his personal life, Alan Greenspan was briefly married to artist Joan Mitchell(1952-53), dated  well-known newscaster Barbara Walters in the 80s, and married journalist Andrea Mitchell in 1997.

#Quote
1 [on how the 2008 financial debacle changed his perspective] Most basic economics up to that point was based on the presumption that human beings are rational in that they look after their long-term self-interest. My shock was that what we now call animal spirits has a certain consistency about it. In other words, you can demonstrate that fear is a far more potent emotion than euphoria or greed. That changed the whole way I look at the world.
2 [on dealing with the recession] Part of the way out is to slow down benefits. Very much to my surprise, benefits are crowding out savings of the society. The data are very clear in that regard.
3 [on discord in the U.S. government, 2013] Clearly the problem is within the Republican Party. If you make every issue uncompromisable, you cannot have laws.
4 You can have a financial system with banks making all sorts of horrible loans, but if they're well-capitalized all of the losses go to the shareholders.
5 I was responsible for lots of things. Some good, some bad. But I'm realistic. Given what I knew at the time, could I have done better? Probably. Did I know it at the time? No.
